What to see in Yecla
History of Yecla
Based on studies and relics found in the nearby areas, settlements were built around the area of Yecla since the Upper Paleolithic times or 30,000 years ago. There is also evidence of settlement dating to the Chalcolithic, the Bronze Age, the Iberian and even the Roman times. The first actual inhabitants of the town were the Arabs up until the mid 13th century. During this time, troops led by Alfonso X took over and colonized the area. By 1264, the town was placed under the eye of the Kingdom of Castile. A few centuries later, during the 16th century, town of Yecla expanded in terms of its population and industries. Because of the Civil War, the town underwent a period of decline. With the coming of the 18th century, the local economy became more stable with the production and selling of wine.
Yecla Architecture
There are various civil and religious architectural structures strewn over the town for tourists to appreciate. As the town was initially built by the Arabs, there are still remnants of the defensive structures that they built. One such relic is the Castillo. Built by the Arabs during the 10th century, only parts of it remain to this day. Other structures are more recent in comparison to the Castillo, evident with style and construction techniques utilized. The Plaza Mayor is a landmark within the Old Town. Using elements from the Renaissance and Baroque styles, there are other ancient landmarks located nearby such as the Clock Tower, the Old Granary, the Alarcos Palace and the Market.
As a predominantly Christian town, there are numerous structures relating to their faith. There is the main temple known as the Basilica of the Immaculate, built during the latter parts of the 18th to 19th century using neoclassical elements. This is seen as the symbol of the town of Yecla. There is also the Sanctuario del Castillo, a 19th century structure built over another chapel. It is currently used as a pilgrimage by residents and other people from the Murcia Region. Other structures include the Church of San Francisco, Ermita de San Roque, the Church of the Child Jesus and the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows.
Tourist Attractions in Yecla
The terrain around town is rich in treasures from the ancient times. Tourists can visit the various archaeological sites or visit existing natural monuments such as the Monte Arabi which contains forms of rock art. There is also the Torrejones which may still yield treasures from the Roman period. While in town, tourists may also enjoy a grand view of the surrounding area, including that of the Sierra Salinas.
What to do in Yecla
When in town, do what the locals do to get a better glimpse and understanding of the local culture and community. This includes participating in one of several local festivities held annually. One such celebration is dedicated to the patron saint. During December 6-8, the Feast of Virgen del Castillo is honored. There are numerous parades and activities such as Kiss the Flag and Alborado which are organized beforehand to celebrate the event.
