It is so remote and difficult to travel to that tourists need to pass a series of roads and highways before reaching the village. The village is situated in the River Seta Valley. It is fascinating to note that the name is derived to mean hollow spots or holes in the soil. It is located in the valley through which we River Seta runs and is on the south facing slopes of the Sierra Alfaro.

Historically, the first mention of the existence of this small town was in the year of 1248 as a sanctuary for Moorish settlers and given by King James I to several members of nobility through the Christian conquest. Beginning the 16th century, the area was attached to the village of Benimasot, another small town located in Valencia.
Because the town of Tollos is quaint and secluded, the population numbers have not improved significantly. It currently holds the record of having the smallest population in the area of Alicante, with only 43 residents as stated by the 1998 census figures. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the population of the village has dwindled and continues to dwindle at an alarming rate with the younger folk moving into other areas. The numbers only increase by a small percentage whenever residents return during their retirement age. It has been said that the people in their retirement age return to the town as the local government has constructed a residence specifically for the elderly members that were registered as residents of the village. The population at the beginning of the 20th century was 210 people, this has slowly decreased, 2005 was the worst year with only 35 residents.
Being a small agricultural town, its residents rely on the growth and harvesting of almond and olive trees. The close bond between the residents and these types of produce is similar to other towns located nearby. As a larger number of the residents are close to retirement or older, the amounts produced are insignificant compared to other towns and cities. More recently, forms of development and modernization have managed to reach the town, creating various shops and structures such as restaurants and retirement homes.
Although the village of Tollos may be small, tourists may be interested in seeing the local parish church with its patron saint the San Antonio de Padua. It is not just a minor town where there is nothing to do. On certain periods of the year, there are holidays dedicated to various saints. Some of these important holidays include the San Vicente Ferrer during May and the Schutzheiligenfest, a celebration dedicated to San Antonio de Padua as well as Our Lady of the Rosary, is held every July 25th. The town is also known for its delicacies such as the minx stew as well the residents’ famous homemade sausages.
