Tips When Walking in Spain

Walking in Spain can be a fun and exciting experience regardless of race or age. The country has a lot to offer, from great food, wonderful scenery as well as a wide variety of flora and fauna to see and appreciate. Walking through different areas in the country allows the visitor to see and experience the various sights and sounds. However, a large number of walking spots in the country are not clearly marked on maps or have unverified information. The following are some tips which would hopefully help interested walkers get the most out their walking experience when in Spain.

Unlike other parts of Europe, the maps sold in Spain are not reliable in terms of information on walking sites or trails. What makes it more difficult is the physical terrain on some of these areas. A large number of these sites reserved for walking in Spain are located in remote areas which are rarely visited. As such, it is vital for trekkers to be fully equipped with the most detailed map of the area as well as a compass of a GPS tracking system if possible. Keep in mind the limitations of the equipment being carried. GPS tracking systems require an unobstructed picture of the sky so keep that in mind when walking in wooded areas or ravines. As much as possible, read up about the area and what it can offer. Ask fellow trekkers or locals on how to go through the area safely. Get as much information on the area so as to be prepared on what to expect while walking through.

As a number of walking spots are remote, so gather all of the necessary gear before heading for the area. Terrains vary so dress comfortably and suited for the season with sturdy walking shoes. During summer, bring a hat and some sun cream as protection from the heat as well as some waterproof jackets in case the weather changes dramatically. It is also important to pack plenty of fluids, either water or rehydration drinks as the weather can get hot and sticky quite quickly. Because of the climate dehydration is a common issue facing walkers in Spain. Carry at least two liters of fluids. Although trekkers may find streams along their travel path, it is not advisable to use them as a source of fluids as there is no assurance of their safety for consumption. It is important to make all of the necessary research and preparations when walking in Spain to make the experience more fun and memorable.
