A little bit about Pinoso

Pinoso is a municipality in the province of Alicante, in the region known as Middle Vinanolopo. The name means “the Pines” in Valencian. The reason for this is that almost 1/3 of the unit of parity is covered with forests with two of the most important areas of forestry being the Sierra de Salinas and the Sierra de Cabezo. The area of the municipality is 126.9 km square and the population according to the National statistics bureau was 7623 people in 2008. It is roughly 55 km distance from both the city of Murcia and the city of Alicante which is the provincial capital. The highest point is 1043 meters above sea level. The town has a close connection with Torrevieja because of the salt water that is carried from the Sierra de Cabezo to the salt flats of Torrevieja.

Some history of Pinoso

The origin of the town is not very clear. There have been settlements in the area from Iberian times, along with the Romans and the Moors. It is thought that the Romans had use of the area because of the food and wine that could be produced from the agricultural usage of the land. During the Moorish conquests, Pinoso was really no more than a few scattered settlements.

The crown of Castile owned the land in the mid-13th century; this was along with the whole province of Alicante. The Aragon Crown, under James II, was next to rule the whole region in 1296. It was only in 1773 that the town actually took the name Pinoso, up until then it was known as Casas de Costa (the Holiday Coast). The parish church was built in 1743 and work began on the clock tower in 1887.

Agriculture is one of the main activities of the area with the production of wine, olives, and almonds and being the main crops. There is also a thriving industrial sector which produces furniture, shoes, and certain food products. Mining is also undertaken for limestone and rock salt.

In the Mount Coto of the Pinoso is located the largest limestone marble deposit in the whole of Spain. The field occupies 10 km² and has been marketed since the mid-1950s. 25% of the entire Spanish consumption of this type of marble comes from the Alicante province and 97% of this comes from the quarry at Monte Coto. You can understand that this quarry is of extreme importance to the local economy.

In 1860, the population was 4780 residents. By 1960 this number had only risen to 5194. As of 2008 the population is 7623. It also has a sizeable number of ex-patriots from the UK. According to the 2006 census, 4.24% of the population was British with 10.96% of the town’s population being of foreign nationality. The population of Pinoso was at its peak at the beginning of the 19th century. This was because the wine industry was very strong at that time. The Phylloxera epidemic swept the region and caused untold damage to the regions vine and subsequently to the wine industry.
