The town of Novelda is situated in the province of Alicante. There is a population of about 25,500 thousand inhabitants. Novelda represents one of the major centers of the marble industry with several quarries and mines for gypsum, silica, limestone, clay, and especially marble.

The architecture in Novelda is inspired by Gaudi. In the 13th century the kingdom of Murcia owned Novelda. Ownership passed to the province of Valencia when Murcia was conquered. As with a lot of this territory, the Moorish were one of the longest lasting settlements until they were defeated by the Christian tribes. It was the Moors that made possible all of the agricultural development in the area. Although previous to all this were the settlements of the Greeks along with the settlements of the Romans and Carthaginians. The mainstay of the industry around here has always been agricultural with plenty of vineyards, almond groves, olive groves, and fig plantations. This area is also known for its saffron and pepper manufacture, in fact there are more than 26 companies in Novelda which the deal exclusively in spices which are sold all over the world.

There are beautiful chalky mountains surrounding this area so if you’re a nature lover you’re going to see some spectacular views and fantastic walks. In Novelda itself, there is a beautiful collection of buildings with historical value that combine the Islamic influence of the Moors, along with baroque and plenty of modern influence. There are also plenty of parks and squares which are not to be missed. A few kilometres outside the town towards the North West is the spectacular Mola Castle. This is a legacy from the Middle Ages, dates from around the 12th century. It is well worth a good walk around. It sits atop a fantastic picturesque hill and can be seen from miles around. It was built on the site of an ancient Roman fortress by the Muslims’, although it was altered in the 14th century by the Christians. The tower is the only one of its kind in Europe and it is one of the earliest examples of the Catalan style civil/military architecture. There are vaults on two the floors. It is a very impressive building visually with the polygon shaped castle sitting within the remains of the ancient city wall. It is an architectural masterpiece having been declared as a monument of national historic and artistic interest over 75 years ago and remaining so today. It is fascinating in the sense that two opposing faiths had a hand in building this castle with its intricate artwork and artistic style across almost 3 centuries. A must see for any day tripper visiting Novelda is the sanctuary of Santa Maria Magdalena. This building has been likened to the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, one of Gaudi’s most famous works. It was designed by the engineer José Sala Sala who was a disciple of the master himself and born in Novelda. Although the first stone was laid in 1918 the church actually took almost 30 years to construct. Another special church for you to visit in the area is the San Roque Church which was built in 1668 during the time and epidemic was making its way through the area. But there are plenty of churches throughout this region which reflect diverse periods of history, right from the mediaeval period through the baroque and into the modern day. Novelda is a thoroughly modern town with magnificent squares, with a wonderful marketplace which holds the fantastic weekly market. It is a mixture of the modern and the ancient in one small area.

The fiestas that are held in Novelda are fantastic to observe. The main Fiesta, which is the Moors and Christians and obviously follows many of the others traditional festivals on this theme in the region, is usually taking place at the end of July. There is a 48 hour parade through the streets in the last week of February which is the only one of its kind held in the country. This parade has been taking place on an annual basis since 1897 when Pope Leo 13th gave permission as a compensation for yet another plague that threatened to engulf the region. It has been continuing ever since religiously. Between May and September every neighborhood town in the region has its own fiestas so if you’re going to the region during those months be sure to look up and the information regarding which town has its event at that time. And the market Day is also on Wednesday. The market has everything you could want from vegetables to small souvenirs.
