A little bit about Muro de Alcoy

Muro de Alcoy is also known as Muro or Muro Alcoy. According to the National statistics office at 2006, Muro de Alcoy has a population of 8446 people. The municipality is approximately 13.5 km² and it is at the foot of the Sierra de Mariola which stretches across the provinces of both Alicante and Valencia. The history and economy of Muro de Alcoy

Much of the surrounding area was previously inhabited by Neolithic and Palaeolithic peoples. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that there was also a Roman occupation of the land. The Moors from North Africa invaded the country in the seventh century and were the masters here for almost 5 centuries. In the 13th century, the town was reconquered by the Christians under the Christian King James I. In the subsequent centuries the town passed through the hands of many different nobles.

During the 16th century, Muro de Alcoy was only the second proper town to exist in the valley, after Cocentaina. The original population consisted of mostly Moors and there were 330 houses that were built in the town in the year 1520. Of course, the area wasn’t very secure and the town did not have a great defense system. The church was built in the parish in 1574 and university privileges were granted to the town in 1584 which separated it from Cocentaina. The village population was devastated during the expulsion of the Moors.

In 1706, the privilege to call themselves town was acquired. During the war of succession, the town was in favor of the Archduke. Up until 1833, the town remained under the government of Alcoy. The original name of the town is Muro de Alcoy, the suffix de Alcoy occurred in 1916. This was following confusion with another town of the same name in Spain.

A railway connection from Alcoy to Gandia was built through the town in 1893. In 1909 another connection…Villena-Alcoy-Yecla completely improved the major network of communications.

The population in 1857 was 3535 people. By 1900 this number had decreased to 3406. By 1950, the population had increased to 4027 and by the year 2005 this number had over doubled to 8148.

The economic activity of the town of Muro de Alcoy is not solely based around agriculture there is also a textile industry that has bloomed in the last few years because of the influence of Alcoy and Cocentaina. The town also produces handmade moldings , frames and handmade guitars.

What to see in Muro de Alcoy

Some of the things that you should see while you are visiting this area includes the Casa y Plaza Palacio (House and Plaza Palace), Ermita de San Antonio, Ermita de la Virgen de los Desamparados (Shrine of our Lady of the Forsaken ), Antigua Estación de Tren (Former Railway Station), all buildings of architectural interest. You should also visit Turballos which is a traditional parish.

There is also a monument which is famous in the area known as Monumento a El Tío Pep (Uncle Pep Monument) this monument is to do with the famous local song. The statue is a representation of the pride for the people and the song that it is linked to is known all over the area. The statue is located at the village entrance.

Les Caixetes is an old factory which is typical of the Industrial Revolution. An 18th-century church that is built in the neoclassical style and on the site of an ancient mosque is the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista (the Church of San Juan Bautista). Also, take a trip up to the archaeological site which dates back to the Palaeolithic and is known as Cueva Beneito (Cave Beneito).

The Costa Blanca is known for its lavish celebrations and carnivals. Fiesta time here can be absolutely superb with everybody enjoying themselves and having lots of fun. Some of the local festivals include the Hogueras de San José (the Bonfires of San Jose) this is one of those festivals that has a lot to do with the spring, taking out the old and burning it, everything being reborn as the town goes into the new season. A traditional village fare is held in commemoration of San Antonio which takes place at the end of January and has a traditional market with plenty of dancing in the Palace Square.

One of the most famous festivals of the entire region is the Fiesta of the Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) which is held to honor the patron saint of the town, Nuestra Señora la Virgen de los Desamparados (Our Lady the Virgin of the Forsaken). The festival is always held at the second week of May.

The town is not too far away from the coast so if you need a day or two walking on the beach, you can accommodate yourself to this very easily. Also, there are the nearby cities of Denia, Javea, Benidorm, and Alicante. Each of these cities has its own way of doing things.
