Murcia

Murcia is a province in the south east of Spain and is a city of the same name. According to the population data from 2009, the population was 436,870 in central city of Murcia, making it the seventh largest city in Spain, and 638,217 people in the province. Its 11,000 km² make up 45 municipalities. It has Andalusia to the west, La Mancha to the north-west and the province of Alicante to the north.

A quarter of the area of Murcia Spain is mountainous, about 35% on a plateaux and flatlands, and the remainder is made up of the valleys and depressions. Murcia weather is extremely mild for most of the winter and the Mediterranean climate gives beautiful warm summers with temperatures often going above 40°C. The weather in Murcia is one of the factors that brings tourists to many of the seaside resorts along the Costa Calída. Yet, the area remains one of the more unknown tourist destinations in the country and is therefore relatively unspoiled.

Murcia airport is located at San Javier. Most flights to Murcia will come through this airport. It is an ex-military base that is located approximately 27 km to the south of Murcia City. In 2009, Murcia airport arrivals totalled 1,630 684 passengers, 18 times as many passengers as arrived here in 1995. Much of this is of course due to cheap flights to Murcia being made available from the budget airlines such as Ryanair and EasyJet.
