Some history about La Nucia

The first people to arrive in la Nucia were attracted here because of the availability of water and the lush landscape. It is a beautiful location being not too far from the sea and having the mountains as a backdrop. First, it was settled by the Iberians, then it was home to the Phoenicians, then the Romans, the Arabs, and finally Christian Spain. Throughout its history, la Nucia has suffered from many bloodthirsty episodes, being involved in many of the wars that took place in the region and also they have had to suffer having their inhabitants killed or captured by the Barbary pirates during the 16th and 17th centuries.

1705 was the year that la Nucia was finally separated from what is now the neighboring town of Polop. Like many of the smaller towns during the 18th and 19th century, there was only so much land and so many resources to go around. A lot of young people couldn’t stay because there was no work and they needed to migrate in order to find a better life. Agriculture was always a traditional method for making money. The Moors certainly helped it along. But today, the income of la Nucia is moving more and more towards tourism. This transformation from agriculture to tourism has made the town extremely inviting and very vibrant. It is one of those places that attract the type of tourists who just wants to get away from the usual package holiday surroundings, from the beaches that are over packed during the summer months, and who wants find to a peaceful retreat where they can enjoy the Spanish way of life in all its finery.

What to see in La Nucia

Many of the locals come here to have a picnic underneath the cool shade of the trees. Also, there is a 600 seater auditorium which is a local cultural centre. If on the other hand you prefer to be in the open air, there is an open air auditorium which seats over 3000 people. As far as sports go, la Nucia have their own football team. They also have a youth centre which was built by the Council in 2005.

The surrounding areas have plenty to offer. Benidorm is a magnet for those seeking a vibrant and fun packed holiday and is really is only a short distance away. On the outskirts of Benidorm you have the two theme parks. One of them is known as Terra Mitica and there are many different thrill rides here to suit everyone. There are four different teams, each with their own right. There is a theme for ancient Rome, a theme for ancient Greece, a theme for ancient Spain, and a theme for ancient Egypt. Of course Benidorm itself is a real hotspot. If you fancy a good night out then Benidorm is the place to you. When you are looking for Benidorm, you won’t be able to miss it because the buildings really dominate the skyline, you will see the many tall towers for miles around.
