The first traces of human existence in quite go back to the Upper Paleolithic period. One of the most exciting finds was uncovered during September, October, and November of 1996. This is when the site known as La Fontera was excavated uncovering a perfectly preserved Phoenician city beneath the sand dunes dating back to the eighth century BC. There is also strong evidence of Roman and Greek culture. There is also discoveries of archaeological remains that mark the subsequent colonization of the area by the Muslim Caliphate Rábita embodied in the monastery of the tenth century AD and that was discovered under the dunes of the Parque Alfonso XIII. There is also archaeological evidence for the arrival of Christians in the mid-thirteenth century, the walled area known as Castell de Guardamar, which served as a stronghold for the defense of the Governorate of Orihuela, until it was completely destroyed and abandoned as consequence of the earthquake of 1829. Another must-see is the Molino de San Antonio, former home late medieval flour mill, now neo-Arabic building, used for storage of grain and subsequent sale and the house and museum of the great engineer Francisco Mira, the house is dedicated to the reforestation process that he carried out on the dunes.

Benidorm also is home to the Terra Mitica and Terra Natura fun parks. Festivities are an important part of the Spanish lifestyle, and Guardamar is no exception. There is the Carnival celebrations which are held in February, the grand processions which are held all over this region celebrating the Moors and Christians during the summer (usually the last two weeks in July), and the Virgin of the Rosary feast which is held on October 7.
