Where is Gata de Gorgos?

Gata de Gorgos is situated on the Costa Blanca in the South East province of Alicante. You can get into the region by trying to one of three different airports within driving distance of the town. First, and by far the closest, is Alicante airport which is located just outside the city of Elche at a distance of 103 km to the town centre. The North is Valencia airport which is not too much further away at 115 km. Many Europeans tend to come in through the Southern airport which is San Javier Murcia Airport. This is because there are many cheap flights which come into this airport every day, but San Javier airport is by far the furthest of the three airports in the region at 186 km distance. By car, you can get to the town via the AP-7. This modern Autovia stretches all the way up and down the coast and is very convenient for Gata de Gorgos.

Gata de Gorgos Car Hire

Facts and figures

The population of Gata de Gorgos is almost 6000 according to the National statistics of 2007. It is situated in La Marina Alta region at approximately 80 meters above sea level.

History

Similar to how the rest of the towns in the region started, the town of Gata de Gorgos initially existed as a tiny village with the Moors as the first inhabitants. Muslims were the main residents in the area from the 8th century until the arrival of King James I in the mid 13th century. The Christians under the command of James I lived peacefully together with the Muslims for several centuries up until 1526. During this time, Charles I forced the inhabitants to be baptized under the Christian faith, infuriating a large number of the Muslims. They were evicted from the towns, drastically reducing the number of inhabitants within these areas. In 1535, the town gained its independence from the town of Denia and had become an essential hub for products harvested from the coastlines.

Architecture

There are several structures within the town dating back to the time of the earlier Christians. One is known as the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel. This is the official parish church of the village, situated at the town’s square. It was opened in 1535, the same year the village got its freedom. Another is the Hermitage of Cristo de Calvario or the Christ of Calvary. In addition, several monuments and statues have been built through the ages, distributed throughout the town.

The town of Gata de Gorgos is also known for its artistic handicrafts. It is most common in using esparto grasses, palm and wicker as their building materials. These are sold in the market, referred to as the Bazaar of the Costa Blanca. Tourists may walk through the various shops filled with a variety of merchandise from souvenirs, baskets and even furniture as well as watching the artisans at work. The 50 shops in this town make up a large part of the profit which supports the economy of the town. On the outskirts of town, at the left side of the Gorgos River, is a park with many trails for tourists to enjoy the local scenery.

What to Do

In addition to seeing the sights, it is also worth noting the various festivals celebrated throughout the year in the village. The town of Gata de Gorgos has a number of festivities, most if not all, are influenced by their religion. During the 5th of January, the Three Kings Parade is held as a reenactment of the Magi’s journey with gifts being given to the children of the town. A few days afterwards, on January 17, is the San Antonio Abad where animals are blessed and paraded all over town. Another common festivity in Spain is Easter, where there is a procession of a figure of Christ carrying the Cross with a group of mourners following. The mourners wear black costumes and carry lit candles. A few months later, on June 24th, the Fiesta of Saint John is celebrated. This is when the bull-running is held in towns all over Spain, a well known festival which the country is known for. Another is the fiesta dedicated to the Archangel Michael. Much like the other fiestas, processions are held as well as a fair for the town’s arts and crafts.

The town is not very far from the coast so you have plenty of opportunities to not only exploit the coastline and take advantage of everything that the tourist resorts had to offer, you can also visit the cities of Denia and Javea where you will find much in the way of interesting architecture and monuments. Or, why not head inland towards the mountains. The mountains of Costa Blanca are becoming more and more known amongst hill walkers. There are many different trails that you can journey through and there are also other activities for those who wish for the peaceful life but don’t really want to be energetic. To the west of Gata de Gorgos are many small villages which are nestled in amongst the hills, a tour of these villages will delight anyone who is hankering after the Spanish way of life.

Sport

There are numerous facilities in the town dedicated to sports. One is referred to as the Sports City which has facilities for recreational swimming, tennis, ratchet ball and indoor football. Another is the CP Holy Christ which has facilities for indoor football, tennis and basketball. The Ratchet de Gata is specifically built for ratchet ball while the Municipal CF is for football.

The region is known for having several world class golf courses. In the town of Gata de Gorgos, golfing also draws crowds of tourists. Within the areas around Gata de Gorgos, there are at least three golf courses that are easily accessible. These include the Oliva Nova Golf near the town of Oliva, Real Faula Golf which is near Benidorm and Ifach Golf Club in the town of Benissa.

Sunshine is the common state when it comes to weather conditions in the district and in Gata de Gorgos. The winters are clement and sunny the summers are lovely and hot.
