Where is Daya Vieja?
The town of Daya Vieja is a small town situated in Valencia Spain at the southeast side of the Alicante Province. It is a one of the smallest towns under the Vega Baja del Segura district measuring approximately 3 kilometers wide. The town has a small number of inhabitants, with numbers reaching only around 400. This number has not changed significantly since its inception and so is the local culture. Some of the towns that surround the area include Dolores, San Fulgencio, Formentera and the municipality of Daya Nueva.
There is a river known as the Segura River which passes alongside the town. The town is located at the center of a plain with a distance of approximately 42 kilometers from the capital of Alicante. Tourists who intend to drive to the area on their own would be happy to know that the town is accessible through the roads A-37 and CV-910. Travelers intending to come to Daya Vieja should arrive at the Alicante Airport, which is located about 40 km to the north or, the traveler can come in by the Southern province of Murcia, the airport is San Javier.

About Daya Vieja
History
The history of the town of Daya Vieja is interesting but not yet fully understood. A graveyard dating as far back to the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans was uncovered near the small town. Documents relating to inhabitants residing in the area are much more recent, dating to the time of the Arabs. The Arabs have resided in a large part of Valencia, putting up several small farmhouses and villages. After the Christian conquest in the 13th century, the number of Moorish residents in the area started to dwindle significantly up until the 17th century when they cast out from the villages. They were replaced by Christian families but the numbers have not increased significantly up to this day.
Architecture
The architecture in a municipality such as Daya Vieja reflects the various influences that have passed through its long history. There are no major structures left from the period when the Arabs first inhabited the area. These may have been destroyed by the earthquake in 1829. One significant structure that has lasted includes the Church of Our Lady of Montserrat, inaugurated in the mid 17th century. Adjacent to this edifice is the Lion Plaza. It is well known in the locality for its six palm trees all growing from the same spot. The image has long been renowned in the village that it has also been associated as the town’s symbol. Within the vicinity of the plaza is the Lion of Pinohermoso, which consists of a column with a statue of a lion holding a shield owned by the Earl of Pinohermoso. The structure known as La Acequia is a more recent structure which was originally built to supply water in the village. It now currently functions as a cultural center with a library, a multipurpose room used for conferences as well as a projection room. The tower which is part of the original structure now functions as a lookout point.
Tourist Attraction
As a country filled with various kinds of terrain, a large number of areas in Spain are suitable for walking and exploration. The town of Daya Vieja is a great example, with trails leading to gardens, bridges, farms and other wonderful sights. It is a town which has relied heavily on agriculture and farming of products such as corn, artichokes, potatoes and even hemp. What to Do
Travelers during their first visit should see and explore as much as they can about the town and the surrounding villages. As a predominantly Catholic town, Daya Vieja allocates several days a year in tribute to their patron saints or other religious activities. This includes what they refer to as the Schutzheiligenfest, held on September 8 in honor of Our Lady of Monserrate. There are several other festivities including the Feast of San Isidro who is known as the patron saint of the famers. This is held on May 15. Easter Sunday and Christmas are also major holidays in the small town. With local festivities, a lot of activities are organized from processions of the holy images, games, plays and even fireworks.
Also, the tourist has access to the beautiful Costa Blanca tourist hotspots including the city of Torrevieja in the south and several cities in the north such as Benidorm and Alicante. Just outside Benidorm there is a theme park which is opened for most of the year. If you’re looking for a relaxing day on the beach there is no better place than Guardamar. This coastal town has a great history, the promenade is fantastic with several bars and cafes where you can have a relaxing beer or cup of coffee depending on your taste.

Sport
The Spanish try to make it a point to have facilities which encourage the residents and the younger generations to take up sports. Soccer is a popular sport locally. It is not surprising to find numerous facilities dedicated to the sport. In Daya Vieja, they have a facility built exclusively for indoor soccer.

The towns within the community of Valencia are known for a variety of local culinary dishes which include the Valencian Paella, Cocido con Pelotas. Restaurants in the area are not limited to providing local delicacies, some even offer international cuisine. In the neighboring town of Formentera del Segura is the New Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant. Within the town of Dolores are the restaurants Rigo Pizzeria and Restaurant Belluga which also offer and serve international cuisine.
The weather in Daya Vieja
The small town of Daya Vieja has experiences a climate typical to areas within the district of Vaga Baja del Segura. Its Mediterranean climate helps draw crowds of tourists from all over. The climate is stable throughout the year with minor variations in temperature, aided by the breeze which comes from sea. Temperatures rarely go beyond 38 degrees Celsius even in the hottest of days of summer while winter temperatures do not go lower than 5 degrees Celsius. This is the ideal climate for growing and harvesting produce such as tangerines, oranges, grapefruits, pomegranates and lemons, which is why agriculture is a major field in these parts.
