Callosa de Segura is located in the Costa Blanca, in the Alicante region between Valencia and Murcia. Near Callosa de Segura you will find the city of Orihuela. Also near to hear the cities of Alicante, Elche, and the town of Torrevieja. There are two airports which are about equal distance to the town. One, the main provincial airport, is Alicante Airport (El Altet) and the other is San Javier Murcia Airport. What to see in Callosa de Segura

The origin of the first settlers of Callosa dates back to prehistory. While deposits are known Chalcolithic (3000 – 2000 BC), the truly relevant and meaningful are those of the Bronze Age (1800 – 1200 BC). In fact, the deposits known as Castle Hillsides are an invaluable example of the Culture of The Argar, having provided a rich typological variety of materials which, at present, are outlined in the Municipal Archaeological Museum.

During the Iberian and Roman times Callosa de Segura also was occupied, and there remains plenty to confirm this. The Arab occupation is marked by the remains of a castle and its complex defensive system of the late ninth century the early tenth century, besieged by Rahman III in the year 924 before the uprising of al-Aslami, lord of Qalyusa . Recently a cemetery and remnants of an Islamic farmhouse were discovered in several excavations.

There are many archaeological relics surviving from the Muslim period especially during the late 12th century and early 13th century. It would be precisely in the second half of this century when a Christian king, James I, conquered Callosa de Segura, particularly on 11 November 1265, feast of St. Martin, hence the assignment of the church to the Bishop of Tours. Through many years of invasions, Callosa de Segura eventually became an independent municipality in 1579. It was given city status on 10 November 1925.

The Archpriest’s Church San Martin Obispo, is undoubtedly the largest building of architectural and historical value in Callosa de Segura as evidenced by the fact of having been declared National Historical and Artistic Monument by Royal Decree on November 14, 1980. There is also the Sant Roque Hermitage which stand up in the Callosa Mountain overlooking the town and in the guiding it. It was built in honor of the patron saint of Callosa de Segura, Saint Roque, who were said to have appeared on the very spot the church was built.

There is a street market held here every Thursday, and as is usual with this part of the world there are plenty of fiestas. The Moors and Christians began in Callosa de Segura in 1977 and since its inception it has been characterized as a party recalls the time of the Reconquista, with the commemoration and organizing a parade in which Participants are divided into two camps, Moors and Christians, dressed according to medieval times of each culture. It is one of the great festivals in the area. The other festivals include the festival honor of its patron San Roque, which begin on 5 August each year, and lasts until around the 16th.

There is plenty to do if you’re into nightlife in Callosa de Segura itself. Otherwise you can travel to the nearby town of Torrevieja, or if you want a bit more nightlife, why not head of to the city of Benidorm. Benidorm also has to theme parks you to enjoy. There are plenty of beautiful sandy beaches along the Costa Blanca where you can either relax with a glass of wine along the many promenades, take in the sun along the beach, or participate in some of the seaside sports including windsurfing and diving. Of course there are the absolutely fabulous Callosa de Segura Mountains which offer great hiking and trekking.
