A Trip to the Alicante Airport
There are numerous airports located within Spain, but only one services the Alicante Province. Aptly named the Alicante Airport, it is the busiest servicing the region of Valencia and the sixth in the entire country. The airport was first built in 1967, taking the place of the former La Rabassa Airport. In the first few years of its operation, the airport was referred to as El Altet, in reference to an area in the vicinity of Elche.
In comparison to other airports in Spain, the Alicante Airport is smaller. It currently has two terminals built right beside each other. A third terminal is expected to open sometime in 2010. The addition of this third terminal will raise the capacity size of the airport to almost double its current limitations.
A number of facilities are available within the Alicante Airport. Similar to other airports, there are numerous establishments within the vicinity such as ATMs, bars and restaurants, gift shops, music stores as well as a number of duty free shops. Disabled passengers need not worry as there are numerous services built for their convenience such as ramps, lifts and toilets. Passengers requiring wheelchairs or additional assistance can do so by informing the airline staff before the scheduled trip.
There are a number of ways to get to and from the airport of Alicante, depending on the budget and convenience. Located right outside the airport’s arrival area is a large parking space that has been reserved for taxis and buses. Buses are cheap and convenient when travelling in large groups. There is a bus leaving the airport terminal almost every 20 minutes. Fare costs approximately 3 Euros which is enough to get travelers to the downtown area. The buses are normally air conditioned with helpful drivers. A railway is also being built inside the airport with no updates on when the service will be available.
For a much faster ride, travelers can choose to hail a taxi. These are appropriate for destinations not serviced but buses or other means of transportation. Taking a ride on a taxi may be a luxury for most travelers. A ride to the Alicante Train Station may already cost around 17 Euros.
Prior to travelling, visitors should plan ahead in terms of accommodations. Tourists intending to travel to Alicante should be aware that there are no hotels available within the vicinity of the airport. The nearest hotels to the Alicante Airport are at least five kilometers away, requiring a ride using a bus or taxi.
