Algorfa Spain
Although archeologists have found artifacts and human remains that date back to the early Iberian times of Spain, there is no proof of there having ever been any village or other organized form of society in the area before the 14th century. Most of the cities in Spain have a history that goes back to the times of the Arab rulers. However, it was in 1328 that Algorfa Spain began its life as a settlement.
The village was given the privilege of being autonomous by the then king, Alfonso the second. This privilege entailed the building of 15 farms whose owners had to ensure the inhabitation of these by at least 15 families. Algorfa was, at the time, a part of the Valencia Kingdom. In 1714, after the wars for succession, the government changed and Algorfa’s privilege was revoked by Felipe the Fifth. Algorfa became a part of the new Spanish Kingdom. Algorfa was, however, given its own parish in 1755. Algorfa’s luck changed once again when the Marquesses requested a reinstatement of the privilege. Carlos the Fourth obliged and Algorfa got back its autonomous privilege in 1790.
Since the 14th century and its first grant of the privilege to establish farmhouses, Algorfa has primarily been an agricultural village. The first settlers took advantage of the rich fertile land close to Segura and soon developed their small simple farms to large fields that provided a variety of harvests. The cultivation of Citrus fruits on the plains near the Sugura River made Algorfa an important agricultural village. At present, the municipality of Algorfa is divided into two parts of which half falls in the Almoradi area and the other half in Algorfa.
Today, Algorfa Spain is one of the country’s villages that still maintain the Spanish culture and traditions due to its small size, agriculture, warm hearted people and beautiful picturesque setting.
