Alcoy is situated in the Costa Blanca, in the Alicante area in between Valencia and Murcia. Alcoy is situated east of Denia and Javea. There’s also a North East of Benidorm and north of Alicante and Elche.

What to see in Alcoy

Alcoy, or Alcoi as it is known in the regional Valencian dialect, is in the province of Alicante and has an estimated population of 60,590 people. It is ranked as the sixth most populous city in the region. The industry in the area revolves around metal, food, paper, and textiles. Some of the most important products of the area are confectionery and sweets. These were first introduced by the Moors during their conquest and the sugarcoated pine nuts, also known as a pecadillas are one of the more popular confectioneries of the area.

One of the great things about Alcoy, and indeed the region is the many rivers which pass through here. This gives rise to many different bridges and viaducts. There are many great places to relax in Alcoy, especially in the old town city centre; as you’re wondering around here, you will find plenty of bars and cafes for a relaxing break to your sightseeing. There are two magnificent gardens here called the Parc de Cantagallet and La Glorieta. There is also an archaeological museum in the Calle San Miguel and just across the road is the Museum de Fiestas.

The fiestas here are absolutely fantastic. One of the most famous, indeed throughout the region, is the Moors and Christians Fiesta. This takes place around the end of April and usually lasts for around four days. If you’re coming to this region of Spain during the latter part of April you should make a point to visit Alcoy.

• El Puente de María Cristina, this bridge was built in 1837 to span the Barchell River.
• The Canalejas Viaduct, built in 1907, 54 meters high
• La Font Roja, this place has one of the last remaining examples of all is Mediterranean forest.
• Safari de Aitana -- this Safari Park is really only a couple of kilometres away from Alcoy there’s all sorts of things for the kids to do, but the best thing is the wild animals roaming around.

Alcoy itself is surrounded by beautiful mountains, and there is indeed plenty of fantastic scenery in the area for the tourist to enjoy. Heading west, there is an abundance of Mediterranean beaches to enjoy including those at Denia and Javea. The spectacular Mediterranean coastline also offers much in the way of enjoyment for the sports enthusiasts including diving, canoeing, sailing, and waterskiing. The golfing enthusiasts will find that Alcoy golfing as much to offer, this is because there are so many golf courses in the region.

Not counting the yummy Spanish gastronomy which is supplied in Alcoy, you can take pleasure from the absolutely wonderful cuisine from numerous assorted nationalities counting Dutch, Chinese, Indian, Cantonese, English, and Hungarian. You actually have to be fussy if you cannot find something to go well with your taste buds in this area. Some of the most popular restaurants in Alcoy include Restaurante Lolo which is a restaurant that has been built in an old farmhouse, there are many beautiful ingredients used here to make up traditional recipes. Next is Restaurante Bambú, this is a popular restaurant which offers great money value and is very busy especially at midday. Finally, El Laurel is a beautiful restaurant set in an old mansion close to Cocentaina which offers rustic traditional cuisine in a beautiful and tranquil atmosphere.

The weather conditions in Alcoy

Right through the year, the weather conditions in the province of Alcoy are sun-drenched. You are virtually sure of sunlight throughout the year. It is regularly fairly hot in the summer and clement in the winter. Rainfall does not appear regularly but it is well established that it does rainfall every now and then. It can often mean a thirst-quenching pause from the faithful heat.
